Western Delta University (popularly referred to as WDU) is the brainchild of a group of Urhobo Scholars under the aegis of Urhobo Advancement Foundation (UAF) who saw the need for a privately financed university in the wetlands of Delta State of Nigeria.
A license to establish the University was granted in May, 2007, and an aggressive infrastructural development permitted its take off in March, 2008 whereby the first batch of students were matriculated into 21 degree programmes encapsulated in two Colleges, vis: Natural and Applied Sciences and Social and Management Sciences in April 2008.
Western Delta University is situated off the busy Benin-Warri Expressway within 40 minutes from either of the two major cities. Oghara is a serene but fast developing town endowed with lush green vegetation, mostly tall palm trees that provide beautiful shade and refreshing breeze at evening time. The roads are well paved with concrete and generally free of congestion and heavy traffic flow. The indigenes are generally friendly.

Thus, the aspiration of the University is to become a premier institution where the best and brightest in scholarship. in economy and in science and technology will have ample opportunity to excel.
