The Department was established at the Western Delta University, Oghara Delta State in April 2007 as Department Of Physics and Energy Studies with Geology and Petroleum Studies (B.Sc (Hons) Geology and Petroleum Studies) being one of the two options.
However, in 2012 Geology and Petroleum Studies was made a full department by the university.
The Philosophy Of The Programme
The Department has a strong commitment to high academic standard of teaching, laboratory practicals, fieldwork, supervised/independent geological mapping exercises. The oil and gas industry is facing key challenges: discovery of new reservoirs and better understanding of the architecture of existing reservoirs in order to optimize their development. The geology and petroleum studies option at Western Delta University is designed with this in mind. Students will be trained in new concepts, new technologies and new tools in geology and petroleum studies.
Aim And Objectives
B.Sc (Hons) Geology and Petroleum Studies. The programme is designed to train undergraduates to be professional geologists in government, parastatals, institutions of higher learning, research Institutes, oil and gas industries and consulting organizations in Nigeria and other countries of the world.
Our academic approach focuses on training students by professionals drawn from academia, industry and applied research. Our graduates will be able to implement cutting-edge technologies and the methodologies needed to make decisions for exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources. For this purpose, we provide our students with all the necessary tools: case studies based on real data provided by industry, use of industrial software, and the organization of numerous field trips in geology and geophysics.
In order to realize these main objectives, students are taught in the various aspects of Geology, with emphasis on Applied Geology subjects e.g Drilling, Well Logging and Formation Evaluation, Geological Mapping exercises, Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, Petroleum Geology, Stratigraphy, Economic and Mining Geology, Micropaleontology, Geochemistry, Sedimentology, Igneous and Metamorphic Geology, Geophysics, Palynology etc. On completion of the programme, our students will be ready plug-ins into the oil and gas industry.
Four (4) Year Degree Programme
Candidates seeking admission into B.Sc Geology and Petroleum Studies must satisfy the University admission requirement i.e. five (5) Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, at not more than two sittings of SSCE/NECO/GCE/OL., UTME subjects are English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics.
Three (3) Year Degree Programme
Direct Entry Students, in addition to satisfying the University requirements must have principal passes at HSC/GCE “A”/Level in at least two of the following subjects: Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Physics or equivalent qualification approved by the university. Students with the ND Certificates (Merit or Lower Credit) are eligible for admission.
Candidates wishing to transfer from other universities recognized by the Senate of WDU may be considered for admission at a level not exceeding 200, provided such student meet the minimum departmental requirement.
