The Department offers a four and three year programmes of courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Sociology. However, because of systematic understanding of the complex nature of society and its interrelationships, it becomes pertinent for other academic and professional disciplines, and several courses from other academic departments of the University to be offered by the students of this department.
To produce high quality graduates that can handle sociological challenges effectively and efficiently.
The mission of the programmes in the Department of Sociology is to develop the student’s understanding of the requisite analytical skills to deal with the sociological problems of the Nigerian state and global society, such that graduates of the Department would promote Nigeria’ sociological development in a globalizing world.
The Department aims to employ concepts, theories, methods and ethnographic data to equip students with knowledge of the cultural and social world of Nigeria, Africa and the whole world. It is desirous to give the students a balanced and broad based training in the art of examining and analyzing cultural and social systems. The department also serves students in departments such as humanities, social sciences, and other disciplines, whose activities are related to the study of human cultures, societies and interrelationships.
The Objectives of a Degree in Sociology are to:
i. Offer students a sound knowledge of sociology and an appreciation of its applications in different socio-cultural context and involve experience of learning and studying the workings of society.
ii. Provide students with broad and well balanced knowledge of sociological theories and methods thereby facilitating their skills development in scientific inquiry.
iii. Develop in students a range of useful competences for public, private or self employment.
Four-Year Degree Programme
Candidates for a four-year programme must possess a Senior Certificate or WASC/NECO or GCE or its requivalent with at least five Credit passes which should include English Language, mathematics, and any two social science subjects from the following Government, Economics, Geography, Commerce and any other subject, which must be obtained in not more than two sittings of the specified examinations.
Three-Year Degree Programme
The requirements for admission into the three-year degree programme (direct entry) are:
1. As specified for the four year programme plus passes in at least two subjects at the GCE (A/L) or HSC including one social science subject OR
2. At least NCE merit passes in TWO teaching subjects plus THREE OTHER CREDIT PASSES in GCE (O/L) or WASC/NECO. These subjects must include English Language and Mathematics in not more than two sittings OR
3. At least a credit pass at the Diploma in Social Work (DSW) plus five credit passes which must include English Language and Mathematics in GCE or WASC/NECO obtained in not more than two sittings OR
4. At least a B+ average in related fields in a National Diploma (ND) Certificate plus five credit passes which must include English Language and Mathematics in GCE or WASC/NECO obtained in not more than two sittings OR An HND in any Social Science subject.
